Spring Planters for Front Porch

Newbie Planter

I am just starting to really fall in love with plants. I have about 10 or 11 in my house, but my green thumb has never ventured to the outdoors.

My mother-in-law always so graciously did this job for me every year. She is unbelievable at it so I always felt so lucky to be able to have her put my planters together. This year, however, I decided I wanted to try and tackle it on my own. I went to Fasels (our local shop) and walked right up to a worker. I’ve learned this, if I don’t know what I’m doing, I don’t wasted time anymore (especially with kiddos in the cart).

Thriller, Filler, Spiller

One thing I did remember was when making planters you want a Thriller, Filler and a Spiller. So I said that, told them how much sun my front porch gets (not a lot) and he pointed me in the right direction!

Thriller – something tall
Filler – fills up most of the pot
Spiller – drapes over the edge. My favorite.

This is the soil I used

At first I only got a 40qt bag of soil which I thought would be plenty. But I used that bag alone to fill up only 1 planter! So I had to go back for more.

Then my cousin mentioned I should put the jars from the plants at the bottom of the planter so I wouldn’t have to use as much soil! Genius! That saved me more than 1/4 of the bag which I will use to repot some of my indoor plants.

Finished Product

I remembered how my mother-in-law placed the plants in previous years and I attempted to mimic. Definitely doesn’t have her expertise but not too bad for a first timer. Excited to see how they bloom over the season.

Tell me, are you a do-it-yourself kind of person when it comes to planters or do you like to get the ready-made ones?

Planters – I couldn’t find my exact ones from Target but these are very similar

Door Matt – It also doesn’t look like my exact door matt is available but here is a similar one.

Rug – Love this rug! Lighter in person.
